Hosseini uses imagery to describe how Mariam is lost in the situation. She lost the sense of her identity and her place in Jalil's heart. Hosseini describes the setting as "She disappeared from her father's table" shows Mariam's reflection as she disappears. This also gives the reader the image that Mariam is lonely. After Nana's death, Mariam can only depend on Jalil. And now, even Jalil is sending her away. This further demonstrates the importance of family reputation. Jalil, as a father, chooses family's prestige over Mariam.
